Dr Aggarwal: Bariatric surgery is very effective and time-efficient but it would be wrong to call it a quick fix. Its lifelong success requires patients’ cooperation and lifestyle changes such as having a healthy diet, regular physical activity and follow-up. Think of it as a launching pad given to you by medical science and you have to capitalize on it.
Dr Aggarwal: While all surgeries carry some risks, Bariatric Surgery is very safe thanks to advanced techniques. The risks associated with staying obese—like heart disease and diabetes—are far greater than the surgery’s risks. The surgery is considered as safe as the other common surgeries like Gall bladder surgery, knee replacement etc. The important thing is to get the surgery done in a good center with experienced surgical team.
Dr Aggarwal: Weight loss is the most obvious and visible benefit but patients receive life altering health benefits inside and out. It is miraculous in treating most obesity-related health conditions, such as type 2 diabetes, sleep apnoea, PCOS, fatty liver and more, Most patients with type 2 diabetes can be discharged without diabetes medication after surgery. More than 50% patients are off medication with good sugar control 5-10 years after surgery. . It decreases the risk of 12-13 types of cancers also!
Dr Aggarwal: This is the most commonly heard misconception. After bariatric surgery, you’ll need to make
healthier food choices and eat smaller portions but you can very much enjoy a wide variety of foods in
moderation. If your “normal” diet includes overeating and having unhealthy food frequently then you will have to make disciplined decisions for the sake of your well-being. It would be a missed opportunity to not do so.
Dr Aggarwal: Bariatric Surgery is effective for people regardless of age. A large part of my patients are those who are young and want to nip their health problems in the bud before they multiply. Marriage, fertility, healthy pregnancies, stamina to enjoy life and to travel etc are also very important and practical human needs that are aided by Bariatric Surgery.
Dr Aggarwal: Usually it is a one and done. Most patients do very well over the long term and maintain a good weight loss. A small percentage of patients do regain weight which may require another procedure in future. Patient’s commitment to healthy eating habits and regular physical activity is required besides ongoing support from the surgical team. We regularly organize patient support group meetings.
Dr Aggarwal: On the contrary, it saves money long-term by reducing the need for weekly or annual treatments that are not sustainable long term. Plus, it certainly saves people from spending on obesity-related diseases, which burn quite a hole in people’s pockets. If someone doesn’t need it, we are forthcoming in saying so. Otherwise, it is an advisable investment in one’s self. Infact, considering the Kgs lost (average of 40 Kg in a patient with excess weight of 55-60 Kg), bariatric surgery is the most cost effective treatment for weight loss.
Dr Aggarwal: Diarrhoea and vomiting are extremely uncommon if the surgery is done technically correctly. Ofcourse, nutritional changes have to be made according to one’s new digestive system. Our dietitian will counsel you about the new diet in the preoperative counseling session. Rest is slightly a case of fear-mongering.
Dr Aggarwal: This is again a myth. Most patients experience a rapid recovery due to minimally invasive techniques. They are allowed to walk 4-6 hours after surgery and are discharged 2 days after surgery with instructions to be mobile and active. One can typically return to work and normal activities within 1-2 weeks and our team always guides the patient through a personalized recovery plan.
Dr Aggarwal: Most patients lose between 50-75% of their excess weight within the first 12-18 months. For a person with height of 160 cm and weight of 120 Kg (BMI= 46.9), the expected wight loss is about 40-45 Kg after 1 year. Sustained success depends on your commitment to diet, exercise, and lifestyle changes. Here are some patients sharing this first-hand experience about common concerns: Chosen testimonials.
